This fly is somewhat unique as a Whitlock original because most of his flies are suggestive or realistic imitations of specific fish food. In the early 90's, he was working hard to develop 'fly fishing for bass' techniques. Flies to fish all water levels, from top to bottom in all seasons.  At that time, as now, conventional tackle bass fishers were having phenomenal success with jig-type, bottom-bouncing, plastic curly-tail grubs, tube lures and rubber-skirted jigs. The scorpion fly is Dave’s design to innovate a fly that had the same characteristics as these conventional classics. It has been so successful that the demand often exceeds supply. It was originally developed for large and small mouth bass, but it's also a terrific walleye, rock bass, white bass, carp, drum, catfish, redfish, snapper, snook and speckled sea trout fly also.  Although it does not imitate a specific food, the shape, texture, squirmy-wriggly bottom action and colors seem to convince so many types of fish that it's great to eat! It can imitate everything from crayfish to a simple leech.

This fly is sold in one size and 4 colors. It is very easy to cast but stretches out to over 3” long when the fly tail is fully extended when it is swimming giving it a much larger profile to get the large boys to chase it down.
