Our partner at Angler Adventures doles out expert advice
Evan:There are many factors that come into play when we start planning a trip, but the biggest driver of the timeline is the client's specificity. The more specific hopes, dreams, and parameters a client has, the more lead time necessary to plan the perfect trip.
For example, if we get a phone call from an angler traveling alone in December who wants to fish anywhere in the Caribbean any time between January and March, and this angler has no preferences on specific lodges, guides, or cost, we can find a high quality trip that works nine times out of ten. The opposite example can be much trickier. If a larger group of anglers is looking for specific dates at a particular lodge, they need to start planning much further in advance. Add specific guide and room type requests, and you need either plenty of lead time, compromise, luck, or all three.
Planning trips to some of our favorite destinations are even more challenging due to limited space, a very narrow "primetime" season window, or a small number of excellent guides. For these special trips, we prefer to plan more than a year ahead whenever possible.
There are also lodges that offer returning anglers the right of first refusal to rebook the same week the following year. Typically, the lodges will hold the dates for 2-4 weeks after the trip, and we encourage our anglers to rebook those dates as soon as they can if they are interested.
We suggest that our anglers with specific requirements plan well in advance - especially if they want to travel with a large group. Anyone who is looking to plan a "last-minute" trip will benefit from being as flexible as possible - and may possibly score some discounted rates.
